The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has removed the Maximum Retail Price of Rs. 750 per kilo that had been placed on turmeric powder.

Chairman of the CAA Maj. Gen. Shantha Dissanayake (Retd.) issued the Order rescinding the Gazette Notification issued on 21 April which imposed the MRP for turmeric powder.

The ban on the import of turmeric has led to the price of the popular ingredient soaring, with importers claiming that a kilo was selling at over Rs. 4,500 in the black market, even when there was a fixed price in place.

Thousands of kilos of turmeric too have been seized by Police as attempts were made to smuggle stocks into the country in recent weeks.
