Main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s Colombo District Parliamentarian S.M. Marrikar was yesterday elected as the Chairman of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Infrastructure and Strategic Development.

Of the seven Sectoral Oversight Committees in Parliament, three are assigned to the Opposition Chairmanship and the election/appointment was on the basis.

The Infrastructure and Strategic Development Oversight Committee has 11 members of which 4 are from the Opposition including MP Marrikar.

Three key Ministries come under the oversight of this Committee and they are the Power and Energy Ministry, the Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Ministry and the Urban Development, Construction and Housing Ministry. Collectively there are 47 institutions under these three Ministries.

The Sectoral Oversight Committee has the power to examine any Bill, except the Bills defined in Article 152 of the Constitution, Treaty, Reports including the Annual and Performance Reports relating to the institutions coming under its purview or any other matter referred to the Committee by Parliament or any Committee or a Minister relating to the subjects and functions within their jurisdiction. It can also conduct at any time such inquiries and investigations as it considers necessary or appropriate in the exercise of its responsibilities.
