  • Cabinet approves two significant projects worth Rs. 3 b to expand and modernise industrial infrastructure in Kalutara district

In a bid to expand and modernise industrial infrastructure in the Western Province, the Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved two key proposals on establishing Ingiriya industrial zone and implementing the second stage of Raigam Milleniya industrial zone.

Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the Western Province continues to attract strong interest from both local and foreign investors due to its well-established infrastructure and skilled workforce.

One of the proposals includes the establishment of a new industrial zone on a 350-acre plot of State-owned land at St. Peter’s Estate, located within the Ingiriya Divisional Secretariat Division in the Kalutara District.

“This newly proposed zone has been allocated an investment of Rs. 2.5 billion, intended to support a range of industries, including; automobile and spare parts manufacturing, rubber and rubber related industries, pharmaceutical manufacturing industries and mixed industries,” he added.

The other proposal includes the implementation of the second phase of development at the Raigama Milleniya Industrial Park.

“The second phase of the project will cover 24-acres of land carved out of a 200-acre area known as New Wetalwatta. It forms part of a broader initiative to establish the Raigama Industrial and Technological Development zone with an investment of Rs. 500 million,” he said.

Dr. Jayatissa noted that these developments form part of the Government’s broader strategy to stimulate regional economic growth, support entrepreneurship and create new job opportunities.

The proposal to this effect submitted by Industries and Entrepreneurship Minister Sunil Handunneththi was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
