The Cabinet of Ministers this week approved awarding of contract under Phase II of the Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project, to Maga Engineering Ltd., the lowest substantially responsive bidder, at a cost of Rs. 2,660.70 million (Japanese Yen 628.10 million).
The contract for laying distribution trunk mains and providing service connections in several Divisional Secretariat Divisions, aims at expanding access to safe drinking water in underserved areas of the district.
Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Sri Lanka, the project seeks to improve water supply coverage across 164 Grama Niladhari Divisions in Padaviya, Kebithigollewa, Horowpothana, Kahatagasdiliya, Rambewa, and Medawachchiya, areas that largely depend on unsafe groundwater sources.
On 30 March 2026, Cabinet approved awarding contracts for Padaviya and Kebithigollewa. Meanwhile, a contractor had already been selected in 2022 under the National Competitive Bidding process for Kahatagasdiliya, Horowpothana, and Rambewa.
The latest approval follows JICA’s concurrence to apply price adjustment provisions in line with prevailing market conditions, alongside a recommendation by the Standing High-Level Procurement Committee.
The project is expected to significantly enhance access to safe and reliable drinking water in the Anuradhapura district, particularly in rural communities long affected by poor groundwater quality.
