Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has told SLPP MPs that he is willing to resign from his post if at least 113 members of his party fail to sign a document expressing confidence in him.

A group of MPs loyal to the PM had started collecting the signatures yesterday at the party headquarters but the numbers who have signed are far below the required number, party sources said.

More than 50 SLPP MPs have called for the PM to step down to pave the way for the appointment of an interim Government under a new Prime Minister.

Over 40 have already taken seats in the Opposition while around 10 others are threatening to do the same if the Prime Minister does not step down.
