  • Expresses confidence in resolution of internal issues within SLFP
  • Says formation of alliances by SJB and former members of SLPP poses no challenge
  • Asserts SLPP will name a presidential candidate following discussions with active members

Former President and MP Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said MP Namal Rajapaksa still has sufficient time to consider a Presidential bid.

Responding to the speculation of his son as a Presidential candidate, the former President stated that his son is not currently pursuing a presidential bid, but may do so at a later stage when the timing is deemed appropriate.

Speaking to journalists in Sri Maha Bodhiya in Anuradhapura yesterday, Rajapaksa said the SLPP will name a candidate for the Presidential Election after discussions with its active members.

“Definitely, they will name a candidate. We did not summon them (party members) as of yet. We will make a decision after holding discussions with them,” he added.

He also expressed confidence that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will soon resolve its internal issues.

Regarding the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) forming an alliance with former members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Rajapaksa asserted that it poses no challenge.

“We have no problem even if 10 alliances are formed. It is good that our people (members of SLPP) are everywhere (in the alliances),” he said.
