Landmark Sooryashakthi Solar Project empowers Vavunativu with another 10 MW of clean energy

Marking a powerful leap forward in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy journey, WindForce PLC and Vidullanka PLC have announced the successful commissioning of the 10 MW Sooryashakthi Solar Power Project with Energy Minister Eng. Kumara Jayakody, as Chief Guest.

This visionary project follows the commissioning of the 10 MW Solar Universe plant also located in Vavunativu, which WindForce and Vidullanka previously collaborated on at the height of the economic crisis in 2022. Building on this success, the partnership extended to the Sooryashakthi plant, where both companies maintain equal 50% stakes.

Under WindForce’s EPC scope, 27 acres of high-salinity land once considered unsuitable for agriculture was transformed into a vibrant source for clean energy. Through innovation, determination, and sustainable design, Sooryashakthi now delivers 19.5 GWh annually to the national grid, lighting the way to a greener, more resilient future.

Despite facing challenging soil conditions and construction delays due to seasonal flooding, the unwavering commitment of the project team supported by strong inter-agency coordination and local engagement ensured timely completion. With 22,048 photovoltaic modules and 34 cutting-edge string inverters, the plant is optimised for high performance and reliability.

Strategically located next to the existing Solar Universe facility in Vavunativu, the project required just a 330-metre transmission line, enabling rapid and efficient grid connectivity with minimal transmission losses.

This milestone is more than just a solar power plant. It’s a symbol of what collaboration, innovation, and perseverance can achieve. Sooryashakthi marks the fourth such collaboration between WindForce and Vidullanka’s, which include two mini hydro projects totalling 3.7 MW installed capacity across the Ganthuna and Madugeta projects, and the Solar Universe solar power project with 10 MW installed capacity. With the dedicated support of the Ministry of Power and Energy, Ceylon Electricity Board, Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, PUCSL, Forest Department, Central Environmental Authority, and many others, Sooryashakthi stands as a proud beacon of progress for Sri Lanka’s energy sector.
