Insurance companies have paid Rs. 13,344.9 million in claims related to Cyclone Ditwah, settling about 23% of the estimated insured losses reported so far, according to data released by the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL).
As of 3 March, insurers had received 24,630 claims linked to the cyclone, with the estimated insured loss reaching Rs. 57,186.7 million.
Motor insurance accounts for the majority of claims reported, with 15,935 cases filed, while non-motor insurance claims — including property and other categories — total 8,695.
Despite the larger number of motor claims, non-motor insurance accounts for the bulk of the estimated losses.
The value of motor insurance claims is estimated at Rs. 6,404.5 million, while non-motor insurance claims amount to Rs. 50,782.2 million.
Insurance companies have so far paid Rs. 13,344.9 million in claims, including advances and ex-gratia payments.
Payments made for motor insurance claims amount to Rs. 3,425.3 million, while payouts for non-motor insurance claims total Rs. 9,919.6 million.
Data released by the regulator show that 20,228 claims have been admitted by insurers, representing an overall admission rate of 82.12%.
Of the motor insurance claims received, 13,765 have been admitted, reflecting an admission rate of 86.38%.
In the non-motor category, insurers have admitted 6,463 claims out of the 8,695 received, representing an admission rate of 74.33%.
The figures reflect the claim position reported by insurers to the IRCSL as the assessment and settlement of Cyclone Ditwah-related losses continue.
