Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will undertake an official visit to Sri Lanka from 8 to 10 September, according to a statement issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in Delhi on behalf of India’s Defence Ministry.

Singh will hold consultations with Sri Lanka’s leadership on a range of issues during the visit and interact separately with the Indian diaspora in Colombo, the statement said. He will lead a high-level delegation comprising senior officials from India’s Defence Ministry and External Affairs Ministry.

The statement described India and Sri Lanka as sharing deep civilisational ties and a multifaceted partnership anchored by regional security, defence, economic and trade cooperation, and strong people-to-people ties. It pointed to India’s assistance to Sri Lanka during the island’s economic crisis, and its role as one of the first responders following Cyclone Ditwah in 2025, as having provided further impetus to the bilateral relationship.

The visit was framed by New Delhi as reflecting India’s continued commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s MAHASAGAR vision, an acronym for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.

The Defence Ministry statement said the visit would further strengthen bilateral relations in mutually beneficial areas, including a strong maritime and defence partnership.
