The Indian Hotels Company Ltd., (IHCL) has signed an agreement to develop a 220-key Taj-branded hotel in Weligama, expanding its presence in Sri Lanka’s southern coastal belt. The greenfield project will comprise 220 keys, including 80 luxury apartments.

IHCL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Puneet Chhatwal said Weligama was emerging as a prominent coastal destination, supported by growth in surfing, wellness, and nature-led tourism. He said the development would reinforce the Taj brand’s footprint in Sri Lanka and confirmed a partnership with Beryll Group.

The beachfront property, located in the Southern Province, will overlook the Indian Ocean. Planned facilities include an all-day dining restaurant, two specialty restaurants, a beach bar and grill, a lounge, and a deli. The resort will also feature a J Wellness Circle spa, gymnasium, swimming pool, children’s play area, and entertainment zone.

Event infrastructure is expected to include a banquet hall and convention space spanning over 9,000 square feet, along with meeting rooms and landscaped lawns.

Beryll Group Director Vishal Agarwal said the collaboration with IHCL would support the development of a coastal resort aligned with the area’s natural setting while meeting international hospitality standards. He said the project reflected the group’s long-term investment commitment to Sri Lanka.
