The Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday cleared to publish the Economic Transformation bill in the Government gazette notification, paving the way for its submission to Parliament for approval.

Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said the draft bill has received clearance from the Attorney General. “This signifies a significant step towards the realisation of economic reforms aimed at driving transformation and growth in the economy,” he said during the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday. The initial draft of the Economic Transformation Bill received policy approval during a Cabinet meeting held on 25 March 2024.

Following this approval, the Legal Draftsman was instructed to incorporate the revisions suggested by the Attorney General and present the formal draft Bill promptly. The proposal was put forth by President Wickremesinghe.
