The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday has given the green light to resume construction on 11 urban development projects that were halted or delayed since 2021 due to the economic crisis.

Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said 18 projects initiated from 2021 onwards had faced suspension, slowdown, or termination by mutual agreement as the country grappled with financial constraints.

“However, of these, six projects have since been completed,” he added.

The proposal approved seeks to restart work on the remaining incomplete projects, which include: 1) construction of the proposed sathipola (weekly market) and multi-purpose building in Walapane, 2) development of Daulagala Sathipola and vehicle park, 3) development of Mullaitivu bus stand, improvement of Habarana sanitation facilities and landscapes, 4) development of the road from Ruwanvelisaya Dagaba to Jethawanaramaya, 5) construction of the administrative building of the new town in Polonnaruwa, 6) construction of Ampara sathipola (weekly market), 7) development of Deiyandara bus stand, 8) development of Gampaha Public Market, 9) development of Peralanda Wetland Park, and 10) development of Panadura Public Market and multipurpose building.

D. Jayatissa said the resumption aims to revive local economic activity, improve public facilities and complete long-delayed infrastructure work in key urban and rural areas.

The proposal to this effect presented by Urban Development, Construction, and Housing Minister Aruna Karunathilake was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
