Govt. to repossess State residences of Ex-Presidents

President Anura Kumara Disanayake yesterday said the Government will repossess State-owned residences provided to former Heads of State once new legislation is enacted in September.

Speaking at a public event in Colombo, he said the decision is part of broader efforts to ensure equal treatment under the law and to eliminate privileges that erode public confidence in governance.

“The law will apply to every citizen alike. Those found guilty of corruption will be punished regardless of their status or influence,” the President said.

He added that maintaining luxury residences for former leaders at a time of economic hardship was unjustifiable. “We cannot continue to impose such expenses on the public while asking them to make sacrifices,” he said.
