Lowers thresholds for colour-coded warnings
The Government has tightened the sugar content thresholds used in mandatory front-of-pack labelling for liquid food products, lowering the limits for colour-coded warnings under a revised gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Health.
The amended regulations, issued under the signature of Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, revise the sugar content ranges that determine whether beverages must display red, amber or green logos on their packaging.
Under the new rules, beverages containing more than 8 grams of sugar per 100 millilitres will be required to carry a red logo, compared with the previous threshold of 11 grams.
The amber category has also been revised to cover products containing between 2.5 grams and 8 grams of sugar per 100 millilitres.
Products containing less than 2.5 grams of sugar per 100 millilitres will qualify for the green category under the updated regulations.
The amendments also introduce alternative methods for displaying the mandatory colour-coded symbols on product packaging to help consumers identify sugar content more easily at the point of purchase.
