The Digital Economy Ministry on Sunday said it was reviewing a plan to eliminate extra fees on debit and credit card transactions.
It said initial discussions have already taken place with the Finance Ministry, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, and the Inland Revenue Department to review the proposal and assess its financial impact.
The consultations also looked at options to cover the losses that consumers currently face when making payments with cards.
As part of the broader move towards a cashless economy, the Ministry added that Sri Lanka plans to shift all transactions over time to QR code-based mobile payment systems.
