The Government yesterday announced that Sri Lankans living overseas as well as foreign nationals can now contribute to national relief efforts supporting communities affected by the ongoing disaster situation across the country.
The initiative was formally communicated during a briefing chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath, with the participation of foreign envoys based in Colombo and Sri Lankan ambassadors serving abroad. Officials said the move aims to streamline international and local donations by establishing dedicated bank accounts to accept contributions in both Sri Lankan rupees and foreign currencies, including US Dollars.
Details of the designated accounts have been shared with Sri Lankan diplomatic missions abroad and foreign missions operating in Sri Lanka to facilitate swift assistance from the global Sri Lankan community and international well-wishers.
According to the Foreign Ministry, two main accounts have been set up: a USD account under the Central Bank of Sri Lanka for overseas donors wishing to remit in US Dollars, and another account under the Deputy Secretary to the Treasury at the Central Bank for contributions in other foreign currencies or Sri Lankan rupees. Local donors may channel their support through a Bank of Ceylon account opened under the Deputy Secretary to the Treasury.
