The Government has decided to increase the Government’s financial contribution from Rs. 650,000 to Rs. 1,000,000 per beneficiary under the national housing program ‘A house for you—A tomorrow for the country’.

This adjustment is intended to ease the financial burden on low-income recipients was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday to ensure continued progress on housing construction across the country.

Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the move is in response to rising construction costs and the growing financial burden on low-income families.

The initiative, which targets one poor or low-income family from each Grama Niladhari division, is aimed at reducing the housing shortage and alleviating poverty through homeownership.

Initially the Government provided Rs. 650,000 per household, while the balance amount estimated at Rs. 1,147,000 at the time was to be covered by the beneficiary. However, due to escalating construction material costs and inflation, the average cost per house has now surged to Rs. 1,764,000, making it increasingly difficult for selected beneficiaries to fund the remainder of the cost.

Many of the recipients, already facing economic hardships, have been unable to continue or complete construction under the original framework.

“Thus, the increased financial support is expected to revive stalled construction efforts and accelerate the program’s goal of uplifting living standards for thousands of vulnerable families across the country,” he added.

Under this initiative, each selected family must construct a house with a minimum floor area of 550 square feet. Aid is released in stages, contingent on the progress of the construction, to ensure proper utilisation of funds and transparency.

Proposal to this effect submitted by the Urban Development, Construction, and Housing Minister Anura Karunathilaka was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
