Sri Lanka has explored energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, particularly in the supply of oil and gas. The talks took place between Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev in Baku.

The discussions also covered strengthening bilateral ties in trade, investment and tourism.

Herath is leading Sri Lanka’s delegation to the 7th Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held in Baku on 14 and 15 October, 2026. CICA is a regional intergovernmental forum promoting cooperation, peace, security and stability across Asia. Herath is scheduled to deliver Sri Lanka’s country statement under the summit theme ‘Stronger CICA: Connectivity, Digitalisation and Sustainable Growth in Asia’.

On the sidelines of the summit, he is expected to hold bilateral talks with representatives of CICA member states, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, as well as Azerbaijani officials and the CICA Secretary-General.

The visit forms part of efforts to deepen Sri Lanka’s diplomatic engagement in Asia and explore new economic partnerships, particularly with the growing economies of Central Asia.
