The Government is in discussions on allowing motor vehicle imports for high-ranking Government officials who have received concessionary vehicle permits upon retirement, Economic Development Deputy Minister Nishantha Jayaweera told Parliament yesterday.
Responding to a question raised by MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, the Deputy Minister said the scheme for issuing vehicle permits to retired senior Government officials remains in effect and has not been suspended.
He said a total of 1,900 permits have been issued under the scheme to date, including 563 permits granted in 2025.
MP Jayasekara urged the Government to allow vehicle imports at least on a priority basis for senior retired officials who hold valid permits.
In response, Deputy Minister Jayaweera said discussions are ongoing on facilitating vehicle imports for eligible retired officials who have already been issued permits under the scheme.
