Govt. begins 2025 with good financials

  • Revenue up YoY 22% in January; Budget deficit dips 

The Government appears to have begun 2025 with good financials, with growth in revenue and a reduction in Budget deficit.

The Government revenue and grants increased to Rs. 346.6 billion or 22% in January from a year earlier.

Total expenditure and net lending increased to Rs. 466 billion compared to Rs. 450.1 billion in January 2024.

During January 2025, the overall Budget deficit decreased to Rs. 119.4 billion compared to Rs. 166.9 billion recorded in January 2024.

During January 2025, net domestic financing decreased to Rs. 130.3 billion compared to Rs. 177.3 billion in the corresponding period of 2024. Foreign financing recorded a net repayment of Rs. 10.9 billion during January 2025, compared to a net repayment of Rs. 10.5 billion recorded in January 2024.

In 2024, Government revenue rose by Rs. 1 trillion or 33% to Rs. 4 trillion. Expenditure rose by Rs. 774 billion or 14% to Rs. 6.13 trillion. In 2023, too, revenue rose by Rs. 1 trillion.

Expenditure and net lending rose by Rs. 889 billion from 2022.
