The Government is intensifying its pursuit of sustainable energy solutions by moving forward with the development of a green hydrogen industry, identified as a key pillar in the country’s strategy to diversify its energy mix and significantly cut carbon emissions.
The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday reviewed and acknowledged the matters presented by the Power Minister Eng. Kumara Jayakody underscoring the importance of designing the hydrogen sector in a way that is compatible with local conditions and requirements, adheres to international safety standards, and meets global performance benchmarks.
“The initiative aligns closely with the country’s commitment to meeting global climate targets, while ensuring long-term energy security,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.
He said the Power and Energy Ministry has already taken foundational steps in this direction, including the launch of the National Hydrogen Road Map and the drafting of a comprehensive renewable hydrogen policy. The roadmap outlines the potential for integrating hydrogen into the national energy system, identifying strategic opportunities for production, storage, and usage across multiple sectors, from power generation to industrial manufacturing and transport.
To ensure that the policy is robust, inclusive and implementable, he said the Ministry plans to initiate a series of public consultation workshops and targeted stakeholder engagements. “These will bring together industry experts, private sector investors, research institutions and community representatives to identify potential challenges, refine regulatory frameworks, and build consensus around Sri Lanka’s hydrogen ambitions,” he said, adding that it is an ongoing process and nothing has been finalised yet.
The Cabinet Spokesman also stressed the importance of aligning the hydrogen strategy with the broader renewable energy transition, which already aims for 70% of electricity generation from renewables by 2030 and net-zero carbon electricity by 2050.
