The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved imposing necessary legal provisions to prevent the export of scrap metal, which is detrimental to local industries.

“Due to the export of counterfeit metal-related products and scrap metal by some parties under different Harmonised System of Classification (HS Codes), there has been a shortage of locally sourced metal-related raw materials for local industries,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

He noted that part of the metal requirement for local manufacturing industries in the country is met by locally sourced scrap metal and the rest by imported scrap metal.

On 9 September 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers approved to suspend the export of scrap metal of iron, copper, aluminium, white iron, high carbon iron, brass and china plate as well as aluminium ingots, zinc ingots and copper wire, to protect local small-scale industrialists.

The proposal to this effect submitted by Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunneththi was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
