The Government yesterday said fuel quotas under the QR-based allocation system have been increased, even as authorities tighten enforcement amid concerns over misuse and hoarding.
Addressing a special media briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said 5,995,365 individuals have now registered under the national QR-based fuel quota scheme, including nearly 2 million new users.
He also said investigations have been launched into 153 mobile phone numbers suspected of exploiting the QR system to obtain fuel fraudulently.
Dr. Jayatissa said Police raids are ongoing to identify individuals allegedly engaged in the illegal storage of fuel.
He said enforcement efforts are aimed at safeguarding equitable distribution at a time when global supply disruptions have forced the country to ration access through digital tracking.
Dr. Jayatissa added that all Ministry Secretaries have been instructed to take proactive measures to reduce energy usage within the public sector, ensuring that the Government sets an example during the current period of economic strain.
While fuel quotas have been expanded, Dr Jayatissa reiterated the need for restraint in consumption, urging the public to minimise usage wherever possible.
Meanwhile, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) reported that 1,511,400 litres of fuel were distributed to filling stations yesterday.
The State-run supplier said stocks were released through its Kolonnawa and Sapugaskanda terminals, as part of efforts to maintain steady countrywide supply despite ongoing logistical and market pressures.
