Govt. plans Rs. 42 b vocational education investment from 2027-31

The Government plans to allocate nearly Rs. 42 billion between 2027 and 2031 to improve vocational education, including Rs. 4 billion to strengthen the Vocational Training Authority (VTA), Prime Minister and Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said.

Speaking at the VTA’s fifth Diploma Convocation in Colombo, she said the investment would seek to develop the VTA into a centre of excellence in every province. Planned reforms include introducing courses aligned with global demand, updating curricula, filling staff vacancies, and improving student facilities.

The Prime Minister said the broader education reforms were aimed at expanding opportunities beyond examination-based pathways and strengthening vocational education.

A total of 717 students who completed vocational studies across 15 courses received diplomas at the convocation.
