The Government yesterday launched a national program to promote energy conservation, as part of efforts to manage potential risks to fuel and electricity supply arising from the Middle East conflict and weather-related uncertainties.
According to a statement from the President’s Office, the program, titled ‘Surakimu Lanka,’ was launched yesterday with the objective of encouraging more efficient use of energy and fostering public participation in safeguarding national energy security.
The initiative will be implemented over a five-month period and seeks to promote behavioural changes in energy consumption rather than impose restrictions.
“The Government is implementing this program considering potential disruptions to the country’s energy and fuel supply due to the prevailing war situation in the Middle East. It also considers forecasts of possible El Niño weather conditions in the future,” the statement said.
It calls on the public to limit electricity usage during peak hours between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., and to shift energy-intensive activities to daytime where possible.
“The program does not intend to impose any restrictions on electricity consumption,” the statement noted, adding that a significant share of power generation is hydropower-based, requiring careful management of water resources.
The Government also emphasised the need to utilise State resources with greater efficiency and transparency, with a key focus on directly involving the public in energy conservation efforts.
Participation is expected from State and semi-Government institutions, as well as the private sector, civil society, and the general public. The program will be implemented under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative.
