The Government is considering discontinuing the current odd-even fuel distribution system and increasing fuel quotas as part of adjustments to the national fuel management program, officials said following a high-level review meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The matter was discussed during the sixth meeting of the committee on maintaining continuity in public service chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
Officials told the meeting that Sri Lanka currently has sufficient fuel stocks until August 2026, while requests have already been made to secure supplies for the remainder of the year as part of efforts to ensure long-term energy security.
Addressing the meeting, Dr. Amarasuriya said the Government’s management of the energy crisis had prevented the hardships experienced in several other countries.
“We managed the crisis so that it did not become a burden on the people. In other countries, there are fuel queues and power cuts, but we handled it properly. The crisis is not over yet, so we must continue to act with vigilance,” she said.
The discussion also focused on longer-term energy management measures, including the appointment of Energy Managers in all State institutions, greater adoption of renewable energy and the introduction of the Green Building Concept under the national Clean Sri Lanka program.
Dr. Amarasuriya said sustainable energy management and public awareness would remain key priorities, while stressing the need to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the Vesak period.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputhanthri, Presidential Chief of Staff B.K. Prabath Chandrakirthi and senior officials from the Ministries of Public Administration, Health, Transport and Energy.
