GIS-based rubber land mapping to meet EUDR rules

The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved implementing Geographic Information System (GIS)-based rubber land mapping to ensure compliance with European Union regulations and safeguard Sri Lanka’s market access.

The European Union’s new deforestation regulations (EUDR) will soon require exporters to prove that rubber and related products sold to the EU are not linked to forest destruction, a significant concern for Sri Lanka, where the EU is a key market for rubber.

To comply with the EUDR, which takes effect after 31 December 2025, Sri Lanka has identified the need for a digital system to trace and verify rubber supply chains.

“The system will geocode rubber lands belonging to small estate owners nationwide, generating detailed, verifiable data on land ownership and utilisation through GIS technology,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

He said the initiative will strengthen supply chain transparency, while promoting sustainable land use.

The proposal to this effect submitted by the Plantation and Infrastructure Facilities Minister K.V. Samantha was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
