Former Standard Chartered banker Dharshan Jayaratne joins BOC Board

The Finance Ministry has appointed former Standard Chartered banker Dharshan Jayaratne as an Independent, Non-Executive Director of Bank of Ceylon (BOC).Jayaratne is a career banker with over 31 years of banking experience in Sri Lanka with leading foreign banks, including 27 years specialising in financial markets. His extensive expertise spans financial markets management, foreign exchange and bond trading, money markets, investment management, capital markets, and structured products.

In 2004, Jayaratne joined Standard Chartered Bank as an interbank trader specialising in foreign exchange and money markets. This move marked the beginning of a distinguished 20-year tenure, during which he advanced through several senior positions within the bank. By 2012, he was appointed Head of Financial Markets Sri Lanka, and was a member of the Country Management Team of the bank, positions he held with distinction until September 2024. 

During this tenure, he also took on additional leadership roles, including Co-Head of Wholesale Banking, Head of Trading, Head of Asset and Liability Management, Head of Financing and Security Services, and, on occasions, as the Acting CEO of Standard Chartered Bank.

Jayaratne began his career at ABN AMRO Bank in 1993, where he acquired essential expertise in bank operations and thereafter moved to the Treasury, establishing a strong foundation for his future roles in the financial sector. In 2002, he transitioned to Citibank’s Treasury Division.
