Foreign holdings in rupee-denominated Government securities crossed the Rs. 200 billion mark last week to reach their highest level in almost eight years, while the rupee strengthened below Rs. 330 against the US dollar for the first time in over 12 weeks, according to Wealth Trust Securities.
Foreign investors recorded a net inflow of Rs. 8.3 billion during the week ended 20 August, marking the 11th consecutive week of net inflows into rupee Treasuries. The inflow lifted total foreign holdings to Rs. 202.51 billion, their highest level since November 2018, Wealth Trust Securities said.
The rupee also strengthened during the week, closing on 21 August at Rs. 329.40/329.50 against the dollar, compared with Rs. 332.80/332.90 a week earlier. Wealth Trust Securities said the exchange rate moved below Rs. 330 to the dollar for the first time since 26 May.
