  • Urges Govt. to bring Bill to abolish Executive Presidency and follow up with referendum
  • Says that is the public demand and SJB will support resolution to dissolve P’ment

SJB MP Eran Wickremaratne

SJB MP Eran Wickremaratne on Thursday urged the Government to introduce the 21st Amendment to the Constitution to abolish the Executive Presidency and let the people decide its fate at a referendum.

“This is the demand of your voters also. Let the people decide at a referendum if they want the executive presidency or not. The Rajapaksas will be sent home by such a referendum,” Wickramaratne said in Parliament.

He said the SJB has handed over the 21st Amendment to the Constitution Bill, but urged the Government to present its own Bill and expedite the process of abolishing the Executive Presidency.

He said some SLPP MPs too are realising that the Executive Presidency must go. “This is the demand of the public and we have to listen to them,” he said.

He recalled that SLPP MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena said that he would support a resolution to dissolve Parliament to enable early elections, and said the SJB too would support such a move.

“I urge the Government to bring such a resolution and we will support it. Those who are protesting today will get the opportunity to either form a new political party or join an existing one and contest the polls and take part in Parliamentary Election,” he said.
