Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody yesterday said more than 65,000 electricity disruptions were reported as severe weather continued to trigger damage across multiple districts.
He noted that heavy rain, strong winds and falling trees and poles have caused widespread damage to power lines. Of the outages reported by yesterday morning, close to 26,000 had been restored.
He said rainfall remains exceptionally high across the island, with several reservoirs near major power installations now spilling. Authorities are implementing measures to manage grid stability and limit the risk of further interruptions.
Ceylon Electricity Board teams are working to reconnect affected communities, though ongoing adverse conditions, including strong winds and continuous rainfall, are delaying the clearance of fallen trees and the repair of damaged lines. The Ministry said crews are working continuously to restore supply as weather permits.
