Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof yesterday announced the launch of trials of fully electric, solar-powered waste-collecting boats on the Beira Lake as part of a wider initiative to restore and revive the historic waterbody.

According to the Governor, the pilot project commenced last week, with the first vessels already undergoing operational trials. Each boat is capable of collecting up to 3,000 kilograms of floating solid waste per day, significantly strengthening efforts to combat pollution in the lake.

“This is one of many projects we will soon be launching to permanently restore and revive the lake,” Yusoof stated in a post on X.

The Governor noted that the initiative is expected to expand further, with up to four boats set to be deployed in the coming months.

He said the project is being implemented in collaboration with Clean Ocean Force, an environmental organisation and member of the Western Province Task Force on Restoring the Beira Lake.

“I am grateful for their hard work to create such innovative products for a good cause,” Yusoof commended the organisation’s role in developing innovative, eco-friendly solutions for environmental challenges.
