Ditwah Task Force pushes for urgent payouts, housing rebuild

The ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Presidential Task Force overseeing post-Ditwah recovery is pushing to accelerate compensation payments, repair damaged homes, and expedite the construction of new housing.

The Task Force, chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, convened on Tuesday, where she instructed officials to expedite the completion of compensation payments for those affected by the disaster caused by Cyclone Ditwah. 

The Prime Minister also directed that necessary measures be taken to ensure that the repair of damaged houses and the construction of new homes are carried out systematically and without delay, the President’s Office said.

Progress of the main committees and subcommittees established under the Presidential Task Force was reviewed and it was decided that the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Presidential Task Force will continue to meet periodically to assess ongoing progress.

In addition, it was decided to convene a special discussion with all District Secretaries, Divisional Secretaries, and other relevant institutions to expedite the programs for new housing construction and infrastructure development.

During the meeting, the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) report on Cyclone Ditwah was formally presented to Dr. Amarasuriya by Defence Deputy Minister Major General (Retd.) Aruna Jayasekara.

The meeting was attended by Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake, Labour Minister and Finance and Planning Deputy Minister Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Minister Dr. Upali Pannilage, Housing, Construction and Water Supply Minister Susil Ranasinghe, Defence Deputy Minister Major General (Retd.) Jayasekara, President’s Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, President’s Chief of Staff Prabath Chandrakeerthi, Finance, Planning and Economic Development Ministry Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Senior Additional Secretary to the President and ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Presidential Task Force Secretary Russell Aponsu, Presidential Adviser Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake; People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi, and other members of the committee.
