The Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL), in collaboration with the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka (IASL), will officially launch Sri Lanka’s Digital Motor Insurance Card, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey.
The official launch ceremony will be held tomorrow, under the patronage of Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala, at the Public Security Ministry Auditorium, Suhurupaya, Battaramulla, with the participation of senior officials of the Police Department, insurance industry leaders, media representatives, and other key stakeholders.
This initiative introduces Sri Lanka’s first Digital Motor Insurance Card, which will become effective nationwide soon. The initiative aligns closely with the Government’s national digitalisation agenda and the “Go Green” policy framework. The Digital Motor Insurance Card eliminates the need for physical plastic insurance cards, offering a more secure, efficient, and environmentally responsible solution for policyholders, insurers, and enforcement authorities.
Key benefits of the Digital Motor Insurance Card include:
Bullets
*Environmental sustainability: Eliminates the printing and annual distribution of millions of plastic insurance cards, thereby supporting national environmental objectives.
*Operational efficiency: Reduces printing and administrative costs for insurance companies, creating opportunities for efficiency gains that ultimately benefit policyholders.
*Policyholder convenience: Enables vehicle owners to access valid motor insurance details at any time through their mobile devices.
This initiative will also enable Police officers to instantly verify motor insurance coverage through a centralised digital system and will significantly reduce forged insurance documents, enhance road safety and strengthen public security.
The Digital Motor Insurance Card is more than a technological upgrade; it is a trust-building initiative that promotes transparency, efficiency, and accountability across the insurance and enforcement ecosystem. Policyholders and law enforcement authorities can verify the validity of their motor insurance policies by dialling a dedicated number, #2252, which will be effective shortly, enabling faster and more efficient roadside checks.
This landmark initiative reflects the strong partnership between the regulator and the industry and signals a new era for Sri Lanka’s motor insurance sector, one that embraces digital innovation while prioritising public interest, sustainability, and national security.
Grant of 500 tablets to the Sri Lanka Police
The IASL, together with its 13 General Insurance member companies, will grant over 500 tablets to the Police Department in support of the rollout of the new Accident Management System. This contribution, made to the Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, will represent the industry’s strong commitment to enhancing road safety, improving accident reporting mechanisms, and supporting the efficiency of frontline officers. The tablets will play a crucial role in enabling Police officers to record accident data digitally and in real time, reducing reliance on manual documentation and improving the overall accuracy and speed of accident reporting.
By strengthening the digital interface between the insurance sector and law enforcement, the grant will contribute to a responsive and transparent environment for motorists across the country.
Optional Compensation Scheme
In parallel with the digital launch, the IRCSL has announced a significant enhancement to the Optional Compensation Scheme (OCS), a mechanism designed to provide prompt compensation to third-party victims of motor vehicle accidents. Under this enhancement, the maximum compensation payable has been increased to Rs. 1 million. This measure reinforces the regulator’s commitment to strengthening consumer protection, ensuring timely financial relief to accident victims, and upholding public confidence in the motor insurance system.
