Deshal re-joins Sampath Bank Board

Young economist Deshal de Mel has rejoined the Board of Sampath Bank PLC as a Non-Executive Independent Director.

He previously served on the Board as a Non- Executive Director (2012-2017) and was also Chairman of SC Securities Ltd. and served on the Board (2014-2017).

De Mel is an economist who worked for the Ministry of Finance of Sri Lanka as Economic Advisor from July 2017 till August 2019.

He is a Commission Member of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka and member of the Board at SriLankan Airlines. He is a Research Director at Verite Research. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA).  

De Mel was previously attached to the Hayleys Group (2010-2017), where he served as Senior Economist and was subsequently involved in establishing Hayleys Global Beverages, where he headed Business Development. He previously worked for the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (2004-2010). His research has been published in a number of books and journals.

 He was recently recognised by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader in 2019. De Mel has a degree in Philosophy, Political Science and Economics from the University of Oxford and completed his Masters in International Political Economy at the London School of Economics.

With the latest appointment, Sampath Bank Board comprises of Chairman Prof. Malik Ranasinghe, Deputy Chairperson Saumya Amarasekera, D.S. Wijayatilake, S.K.G. Senanayake, A.H.W. Senanayake, R.P. Pathirana, Y.S.H.R.S. Silva, D.K.D.S. Wijeratne, A. Nanayakkara, J.T.V.S. Weerawarana and W.D.P. De Mel.
