Daily COVID-19 fatalities exceed 100 for 2nd consecutive day

Over 100 COVID-19 fatalities were confirmed for the second consecutive day, with the Director-General of Health Services confirming 118 COVID-19 deaths on Monday.

The previous day, 111 COVID-19 deaths were confirmed.

This raises Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 death toll to 5,340, of which 3,104 are male and 2,236 are female. Of the fatalities confirmed on Monday, 79 were male and 39 were female.

According to the Department of Government Information, 101 of the fatalities confirmed on Monday were over the age of 60, while 17 were between ages 30 and 59.

The majority of COVID-19 deaths are over the age of 60, with the Epidemiology Unit stating that 75.12% of the total fatalities are above age 60, 23.71% are between ages 30 and 59, and 1.17% are below age 30.

Director-General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena yesterday said only 200 persons who are vaccinated are among the country’s COVID-19 fatalities. Of this, 177 persons had only received one dose.

He added that the 23 persons with both doses who died had other serious medical conditions as well.
