Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa
The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved establishing a dedicated research unit within the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (Sri Lanka CERT) to strengthen national cybersecurity capabilities in line with the country’s accelerating digital transformation agenda.
Announcing the decisions at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the new Cyber Threat and Malware Analysis Research Unit will play a key role in identifying and mitigating cyber threats, boosting malware analysis capabilities and developing skilled human resources to support secure digital infrastructure.
He said the initiative is critical to ensuring a safe cyber environment as Sri Lanka advances key digitalisation projects, including the Sri Lanka Digital Identity Card Project, the National Data Sharing Digital Platform, and the Lanka Government Cloud.
“The new lab will help the Government lead the way toward a digital economy by ensuring cybersecurity, adopting global best practices and strengthening national resilience against digital threats,” Dr. Jayatissa stated.
The proposal to this effect presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Digital Economy Minister was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
Last week, the Government announced that it was ramping up efforts to drive digital transformation spearheaded by the Digital Economy Ministry and Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), adding that the GovPay platform plans to onboard over 150 State organisations by September 2025. The move was announced as the platform got on board 52 institutions and crossed Rs. 65.62 million in digital payments via 7,024 seamless transactions since its launch on 7 February this year by President Disanayake (https://www.ft.lk/top-story/SL-speeds-up-digital-drive-with-GovPay-expansion/26-778999).
In addition, ICTA announced its readiness to take a significant leap forward in its digital governance agenda with the launch of a comprehensive ‘Super App’ that will centralise access to a wide array of Government services on a single mobile platform (https://www.ft.lk/front-page/ICTA-to-launch-digital-Super-App-to-revolutionise-access-to-public-services/44-779011).
