Sri Lanka’s credit card base expanded in February, with the total number of active cards rising 1.3% compared to December 2025 to 2,193,380 from 2,166,186, according to latest data.

The increase was driven by globally accepted cards, which grew 1.3% to 2,184,600 from 2,157,271. Locally accepted cards declined 1.5% to 8,780 from 8,915.

Outstanding balances on credit cards edged up 0.5% to Rs. 190.65 billion in February from Rs. 189.71 billion in December 2025.

Balances on globally accepted cards increased 0.6% to Rs. 151.18 billion from Rs. 150.21 billion, while locally accepted cards rose 0.4% to Rs. 39.47 billion from Rs. 39.49 billion.

The data point to a gradual expansion in card usage alongside modest growth in outstanding balances, suggesting steady consumer demand for credit without a significant increase in leverage.
