Container transport charges have been increased by 5% with effect from 1 June following the latest fuel price revision, the Container Transport Owners Association announced yesterday.
Association Chairman Sanath Manjula said the decision was taken in response to rising operating costs faced by transport operators after the latest increase in fuel prices.
Addressing the media, Manjula said the revised rates came into effect from yesterday and would apply to container transportation services across the country.
The increase follows the latest fuel price revision implemented by the State-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) on 31 May, under which diesel and petrol prices were raised for the fifth time since the escalation of the Middle East conflict in late February.
Industry stakeholders have warned that higher fuel costs have significantly increased transport and logistics expenses, placing pressure on container haulage operators and other segments of the supply chain.
The latest increase is expected to add to logistics costs for importers and exporters at a time when businesses are already grappling with higher freight and energy expenses resulting from the global oil price surge.
