Construction PMI increases in June

The Sri Lanka Purchasing Managers’ Index for Construction (PMI–Construction), as reflected in the Total Activity Index, increased to 60 in June 2026 from 59.1 in May, indicating an expansion in construction activities.

Its compiler, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) said most survey respondents attributed this increase to the ongoing execution of construction projects awarded in preceding months.

The Employment Index increased further to 61.4 in June from 56.1 in May, as firms continued to ramp up staff recruitment. However, many survey respondents highlighted the persistent shortage of skilled construction workers.

The Quantity of Purchases Index increased to 60 in June from 59.1 in May with the continued increase in construction activities. Nevertheless, many survey respondents reported that shortages of key raw materials, particularly bitumen, continued to restrain the pace of construction activities.

However, the Suppliers’ Delivery Time Index remained elevated in June, but at a slower rate due to ongoing supply disruptions.

The CBSL noted that the business sentiment among construction firms remained positive for the quarter ahead, underpinned by a healthy pipeline of work, though the risk of input shortages continued to pose a bottleneck to sectoral growth.
