The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Tuesday approved supporting and expanding the export-oriented agricultural sector to meet its crop targets via a new initiative. The program is scheduled to be implemented from this year by the Department of Export Agriculture.
“The initiative aims to enhance productivity, sustainability, and market access, particularly in organic segments, with the Government committing to cover up to 50% of the investment costs borne by cultivators and related stakeholders for selective initiatives,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.
The initiative targets the development and promotion of 14 key export crops including; pepper, coffee, areca nut, cocoa, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, vanilla, betel, lemongrass, citrus, garcinia, turmeric and ginger.
At present these crops are cultivated in lands spanning around 82,000 hectares and involve nearly one million stakeholders across cultivation and value added industries.
The approved components of the program include:
During the first four months of 2025, spices and concentrates exports saw a 63.44% year-on-year (YoY) increase to $ 142.98 million compared to $ 87.48 million during the same period a year ago. In 2024, Sri Lanka generated $ 461.85 million export revenue from spices and concentrates, marking a 16.11% YoY growth.
He said the initiative is designed to reposition Sri Lanka as a global leader in premium, ethically produced export agricultural products.
The proposal to this effect submitted by Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
