Colombo Port container volumes up 5.7% YoY in YTD Aug. 2025

Container volumes handled at the Port of Colombo rose 5.7% year-on-year (YoY) to 5.43 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first eight months of 2025, compared to 5.14 million TEUs in the same period last year, the latest Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) data showed.



Transshipment volumes grew 3.8% to 4.35 million TEUs from 4.19 million TEUs a year earlier. Domestic container handling recorded a faster pace of expansion, increasing 13.7% YoY to 858,324 TEUs from 754,834 TEUs in 2024.

In August alone, total container throughput rose 16.8% YoY to 741,124 TEUs from 634,554 TEUs a year earlier. Transshipment volumes increased 16% to 592,413 TEUs, while domestic volumes were up 3.2% to 113,615 TEUs.

Total cargo tonnage handled by Sri Lankan ports in the January-August period rose 2.1% YoY to 82.4 million metric tons from 80.7 million metric tons a year ago.
