Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill comes into force

  • On a public holiday, Speaker certifies Bill a week after P’ment approved the legislation
  • Final version of Bill yet to be made public

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana yesterday certified the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill which was passed in Parliament on 20 May.

The Bill came into force with its certification by the Speaker. The certification was done yesterday despite it being a public holiday. 

The Bill was approved by Parliament with over 20 amendments as proposed by the Supreme Court. However, the final version of the amended Bill is yet to be printed by the Government Printer and made public.

The Bill provides for the establishment of a Commission empowered to grant registrations, licenses, authorisations, and other approvals to carry on businesses and other activities in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to be established within the Colombo Port City.
