China grants $ 20 m to support digital education rollout

Sri Lanka is set to accelerate its digital transformation in the education sector with a $ 20 million grant from the People’s Republic of China, following a bilateral agreement reached during President Anura Kumara Disanayake’s official visit to Beijing in January 2025.

The Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday approved the proposal submitted by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in her capacity as the Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister to implement the first phase of the project aimed at modernising general education countrywide.

The initiative will equip 500 selected schools with complete ‘smart classroom’ under the proposed project, and to establish the Network Operations Management Unit, the Studio Room and the Conference Room under the project in the ‘Isurupaya’ premises.

“The selection of the 500 schools was done through an expert committee based on an assessment reflecting facilities and sufficient technological access,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa clarified responding to questions posed at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

He added that the discussions are also underway on how best to align this initiative with existing reforms in curriculum and teacher training.
