Beijing Capital Airlines is set to commence direct flight operations between Beijing and Colombo from 31 January 2026, the Sri Lanka Embassy in China announced.
China is the fourth largest tourism market for Sri Lanka.
The development follows a recent discussion between Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to China Majintha Jayesinghe and Beijing Capital Airlines President Liu Jun where plans to introduce the new air link were taken up.
Chinese tourist arrivals amounted to 121,671 in the first eleven months of the year, slightly down from 131,681 a year ago.
Chinese tourists accounted for 6% or 5,402 of total 21,156 arrivals in the first two weeks of December 2025. On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, India remains the cornerstone of the surge in arrivals, sending 495,952 travellers, nearly a quarter of total arrivals; followed by Russia with 168,616 travellers, Germany with 138,119 tourists, and China with 127,073 visitors.
