Champika’s arrest: Deputy Speaker complains to NPC

Deputy Speaker Ananda Kumarasiri yesterday wrote to the National Police Commission (NPC) informing them that due process was not followed during the arrest of MP Champika Ranawaka.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the NPC, Kumarasiri stressed that he did not believe due process was carried out during the arrest and requested action be taken.

The Deputy Speaker reminded NPC Chairman W. E Waraliaddha that traditionally, if a Member of Parliament is to be arrested, due process is followed in accordance with the MP’s Parliamentary privilege.

Kumarasiri has pointed out that the letter sent to the Speaker and himself by the Police, informing of the impending arrest, had only reached his office at 3:24 p.m. on 19 December. He has also drawn attention to the arresting officer attempting to contact him on the phone after he had initiated the arrest process.

Citing the discrepancy in following the established traditions and due process, the Deputy Speaker has requested the Chairman to take necessary action on the matter.
