In expanding fertility treatment options, Sri Lanka yesterday launched its first-ever sperm bank at the Castle Street Hospital for Women in Colombo, marking a significant advancement in reproductive healthcare.

The new facility aims to provide hope for individuals and couples facing fertility challenges by offering access to high-quality donor sperm for fertility treatments.

A sperm bank is a specialised facility that collects, stores, and provides donated sperm for use in procedures such as artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Globally, sperm banks have played a crucial role in helping individuals and couples overcome fertility issues, particularly those with male infertility or single women seeking to conceive.

Hospital Director Dr. Ajith Kumara Danthanarayana stated that the service will operate under strict privacy and confidentiality protocols.

He assured that both donor anonymity and recipient privacy will be fully protected, in line with international medical standards.

To ensure the safety and quality of sperm donations, all donors will be required to undergo a series of medical tests before their samples are accepted.

The hospital has also encouraged men to support this initiative by donating sperm, recognising it as a vital contribution to improving reproductive healthcare in Sri Lanka.
