Cargills Bank has launched the Cargills Bank Ocean Plastic Debit Card, marking the first time such a product has been introduced to the Sri Lankan market.

This initiative is a key part of the bank’s commitment to sustainable banking and serves as a practical step toward addressing the global challenge of marine pollution. The cards are produced using recycled ocean-bound plastic specifically sourced from the Indian Ocean region, including the Maldives, as well as the Dominican Republic. By transitioning to these recycled materials, Cargills Bank aims to raise meaningful awareness about the impact of plastic waste on our oceans while supporting the protection of coastal ecosystems. This move aligns the bank’s operations with circular economy principles, providing customers with a way to support environmental sustainability through their everyday financial choices.

Managing Director/CEO Senarath Bandara said: “This sustainability initiative is a continuation of the bank’s Corporate Sustainability Goals (CSG), reflecting a deep-seated commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of traditional banking operations. The successful realisation of this eco-friendly product was made possible through the technical and production expertise of Lake House Printers and Publishers PLC, alongside the global payment technology leadership of Mastercard. Together, these partners have ensured that the Ocean Plastic card meets the highest international standards of durability and security while remaining an emblem of environmental responsibility.”

Head of Card Services Kaushi Fernando said: “From an operational standpoint, transitioning to ocean-bound plastic was a meticulous process to ensure that sustainability did not compromise functional excellence. We have integrated this eco-friendly material into our existing debit card infrastructure seamlessly, ensuring that our customers enjoy the same high-speed transaction capabilities and global acceptance they expect from Cargills Bank. This product allows our cardholders to carry a piece of our conservation mission in their pockets, turning every point-of-sale interaction into a statement of environmental advocacy.”

To further drive awareness and community engagement, Cargills Bank will be providing extensive visibility for this initiative across its social media channels, inviting customers to become active participants in the bank’s journey toward a greener future. This launch underscores the bank’s belief that modern financial services must not only be innovative but also ethically aligned with the preservation of the planet for future generations.
