The Cabinet of Ministers has given the green light to import an extra 42 million eggs in preparation for the upcoming festive season.

Back in December 2023, the Cabinet had already approved the import of eggs necessary until April 30, 2024. As a result, approximately 18 million eggs were brought in, but an additional 42 million eggs are now deemed necessary to meet consumer demand during the festive period.

Concurrently, the Department of Animal Production and Health has invited quotations from eligible Indian establishments to import the required quantity of eggs.

The proposal, presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Finance, Economic Stabilization, and National Policies Minister, received the Cabinet’s approval during its meeting on Monday.
