The Cabinet of Ministers this week reviewed the progress of large-scale development projects for which nearly Rs. 700 billion has been set aside via the National Budget.

Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that there was a misconception that there was no development taking place in the country, noting that on the contrary 284 large-scale development projects were progressing satisfactorily as per the review of the first quarter report presented by the Prime Minister as the Minister of Finance at this week’s Cabinet meeting.

He said 41 ministries were engaged in carrying out these large-scale projects whilst the 2021 Budget had allocated Rs. 692.5 billion.

Of the total, 53 projects are pertaining to the Government’s pioneer development targets such as ‘Drinking Water for All’ and ‘Development of Road Network of 100,000 kilometres’.

Rambukwella said the Cabinet of Ministers acknowledged the necessity to immediately resolve procedural and legal issues connected to land acquisition as delays directly impacted the performance of some of the projects.

The need for all relevant entities to work together to accomplish the precise investment targets expected from those projects was also emphasised.
